Investor Advocate & Advisor Partner
Earlier in my 25 year investment and finance career, I was a principle of a registered investment advisory firm that subsequently merged into a larger private wealth management firm. As a RIA, I began to become skeptical of the value proposition that our firm and the majority of financial advisors provided to their client’s portfolios. I have always maintained that the dirty little secret of investment advisors and brokers is that so many of them significantly overstate their competencies…a validated position in light of financial services industry’s recent enormous failure to its clients. Consequently, I enjoy meeting, partnering with and learning from responsible and forward-thinking investment advisors that ignore those dogmatic doctrines of DFA, Modern Portfolio Fallacies and Efficient Market Hypocrisies. Those thoroughly discredited models accumulated (and subsequently destroyed) billions of hard-earned investor assets under the cover of “diversification” while ignoring the black swans that they had laid their very own eyes upon. I have been a frequent keynote speaker and educator at investment advisor conferences and my industry commentaries have appeared on CNBC, the usual suspect industry publications and in a monthly alternative investment column that I have been writing for Investment Advisor magazine for the past 7 years.
Private Venture Investment and Finance
I have been a managing partner of Prescient Capital Partners since co-founding the firm in 1999. We specialize in direct venture, early and mezzanine-stage investments in emerging healthcare, lifesciences, technology, entertainment/media and hospitality companies. The firm has participated in a number of highly visible and profitable liquidity events. In 2007, I founded Prescient Advisors to provide venture catalyst, strategic banking and finance consulting services to entrepreneurs and CEOs of start-up, emerging and established companies across a specific range of selected investment sectors and themes. Recently, we formed Prescient Partners to facilitate private syndicates and co-investment with investors, financial advisors and other intermediaries that share an interest in our investment themes and portfolio.
Alternative Investments
In addition to private venture investing, I am compelled by non-traditional and forward-thinking investment opportunities and asset classes. This has resulted in achieving peer visibility among investment advisors as an authority and resource with respect to alternative strategies such as hedge funds, managed futures and other vehicles that seek asymmetric investment outcomes. Until 2007, I was the managing director of Alternative Strategies for Rydex Investments, and was responsible for investment product origination, development and investment management of the firm’s proprietary institutional alternative trading strategies. The alternative investment products that my team developed included the mutual fund industry’s first multi-strategy absolute return fund and the first managed futures fund offering daily liquidity. Our new product slate attracted billions in new assets. Prior to Rydex, I held managing director positions at Hedgeworld Capital Markets in Rye, NY and Hedge Fund Research (HFR) in Chicago, IL.
My professional experiences provide the basis for my advocacy of private venture investment.
